Today, the University of Rochester, New York is affiliated with Pulitzer Nobel Prize winners, but the University has come a long way in its more than 150-year history. Founded in 1850 as a Baptist institution, the university received its charter form the State of New York on January 31, 1850. The first classes were held that year with approximately 60 students in attendance. The school's original campus being the United States Hotel in downtown Rochester near what is today West Main Street.

In 1853, the campus of the University of Rochester, New York campus was moved to University Avenue. In 1930, the University of Rochester, New York's current River Campus was finally built.
